He was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Athletic Training and the founding editor of the Athletic Training Education Journal. Knight was honored by the NATA in 1995 as the Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator, in 1997 William Clancy Distinguished Research award, and in 2002 with induction into the NATA Hall of Fame. Montreal, Quebec

Charlen was certified with the CATA in 1985 (5th in Quebec), co-founded the Quebec Athletic Therapist Association for which she was president from 1988 to 1992. Having completed her Osteopathy degree in 1995 with a thesis on the effect of osteopathy treatments on the arches of the foot, she now teaches the orthopaedic and neurologic assessment courses to students and professors of her College. Co-owner of a sports medicine clinic since 1996, he duties include treatments to athletes and general population and administrative work as clinical coordinator of athletic therapy services offered by the clinic to national training centers (short track speed skating, synchronised swimming and the Montreal Multisport center CNM-M).

Her interest in radiology and medical imaging started in 2004. She believes that ‘’the more accurate the diagnosis for a pathology is, the more we are able to choose an appropriate intervention and treatment plan for our patients’’. Charlen started teaching an introductory course to radiology and medical imaging at Concordia University in 2006 and is currently teaching this 2H course annually. Medical imaging has evolved tremendously over the past 10 years, new lesions are now diagnosed and athletic therapist must be aware and knowledgeable of these new tools that will allow them to improve the quality of their care to their patients.

Dr. Edward Glaser

Dr. Edward Glaser, DPM

“Foot Posture Biomechanics – MASS Theory”
Lyles, TN

Edward Glaser, DPM, studied mechanical engineering at SUNY Stonybrook, and went on to receive his doctorate in podiatric medicine at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. This is not a common pathway for a medical student, but it turned out to be just the right exposure for a future student of the foot. He was in private practice for 13 years before dedicating all of his energies to the development of MASS Position Theory, which has added a new and comprehensive paradigm to the field of biomechanics. He has earned a substantial national and international reputation for re-visioning and re-engineering the way practitioners can significantly correct poor biomechanics in the foot and lower extremity. His new analysis and practical, common-sense approach to the casting and design of custom, full arch contact, calibrated foot orthotics has helped many Athletic Trainers achieve a new level of success treating and preventing injuries. He offers the first credible challenge to the standard, industry techniques originated by Root, Orien and Weed in 1977.

Ultrasound Research: An Update.”

Dr. Johns currently holds the rank of Professor and serves as Chair of the Department of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine and is the Program Director for the Athletic Training program at Quinnipiac University. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Athletic Training and has previously served as Vice Chair of the Free Communications Subcommittee and a member of the NATA-Research Education Foundation Research Committee. While at the University of Vermont, Dr. Johns studied Neuro-Immunology and the role that cytokines play in the regulation of the inflammatory response and injury repair. As a post doctoral fellow at Bayer Pharmaceutical, he studied signal transduction and gene regulation, before taking a position in higher education at the University of Wisconsin Parkside. Dr. Johns has focused his studies on energy modalities (ultrasound and low level laser) and has published several studies comparing ultrasound beam profiles produced by various manufacturers. Analysis includes independent measures of effective radiating area (ERA), beam non uniformity ratio (BNR) and Schlieren analysis. Current funding for this line of research is over $100,000 and has been supported by the EATA, NATA-REF and Quinnipiac University. In addition to his studies regarding evidence base applications of therapeutic ultrasound, Dr. Johns is studying the effect of low level laser therapy on inflammation.

Dr. Johns received an undergraduate degree from Lock Haven University in 1985, a Masters in Biology from Bucknell University 1987 and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Vermont in 1992.
